How to Make Herbal Salts
We all know how important salt is to everyone’s kitchen as it adds taste to a meal. Aside from improving a specific meal’s taste, it also has several health benefits if used properly.  Some of the health benefits it brings are listed below:
  • Helps in water retention.
  • Stimulates muscle contraction.
  • Stimulates adrenalin gland.
  • Prevents muscle cramps.
  • Keeps calcium and other minerals in the bloodstream.
  • Helps during the digestion and absorption of nutrients.
These benefits are proof that salt is not synonymous to any toxic materials. Yes, excessive usage may lead to several illnesses, but failing to take in an adequate amount could also result in negative effects. Salts may be incorporated to herbs -- an option in order for you to be able to put in an additional health benefit or two.  Herbs are great antioxidants which help protect your body from illnesses such as infections and cancer.  Also, it adds aroma and flavor to a typical meal. Instead of completely eliminating that salt shaker on your table, it would be better to resort to using herb salt instead.

Here’s how you may be able to do one at your own kitchen:

  1. Thoroughly chop your 1 oz. herbs. Common herbs that are being incorporated on salts are oregano, thyme, parsley and dill. You can still add more depending on your preferences.
  2. Pre-heat your oven for about 140 degrees F. It should be at the lowest possible temperature to ensure your herbs do not burn.
  3. Spread out your herbs on a tray thinly and slowly cook it for about 2 hours.
  4. Get ½ cup coarse salt and place it inside a blender with your 1 oz cooked herb. Thoroughly blend it until the herbs mix well on the salt.
  5. Optional: Add black peppercorn for additional taste.
Your herb salt may be used as a seasoning on your grilled meat or as a topping on your vegetable salad to improve its taste, but remember to use it sparingly.  Even thought your salt has been infused with herbs, it will not lessen the health risks associated with using to much sodium.
